I refer to this whole vacation as our "Plan C" vacation. We originally had ten nights worth of reservations made for a trip to Yellowstone (tent camping there and all along the way), but poor weather forecasts led us to cancel all those reservations the day before we left, and make new ones. New destination: Lake Tahoe. Yay for Plan B! But in spite of ten days worth of new reservations, we ended up sticking to our plans for only three of those ten days. Yay for Plan C!
We had a goal of leaving town by 10:00, but due to some packing procrastination and our excitement over a visit from our friends Alan and Kacey, we didn't get on the road until 2:00. That type of delay equals every husband's nightmare, but Jace did a great job controlling his anxiety. Ahhh...off to a good start:

Road tripping with three small children requires lots of stops to stretch legs, eat snacks, and go potty. (Did I mention that Delaney potty trained herself four days before our departure? That made things interesting.) Our first stop was an elementary school playground:

Our late start meant we wouldn't arrive at our pre-planned destination until 9pm. (Think three cranky kids and Daddy pitching our ginormous tent in the dark.) At 5:30 we passed a little campground just outside Prineville that had availability, and saw our opportunity to avoid some stress. It was the prettiest little campground, and our site backed to a lake view. Thank you Lord!

"Scootering":

Hot dogs and macaroni. A very standard camping meal.

The best part of camping is hanging out around the fire with my honey:

Cuddle bugs:

Fun with the camera while we quietly wait for Dad and Delaney to wake up:

I love this boy:

Day two started without a hitch, and we were back on the open road:

Day two ended with a hitch when we realized we were supposed to camp in this weather:

We decided a hotel room would better suit us that evening.

By day three the weather had cleared up. We had lunch at a park before driving the final stretch to Lake Tahoe:

Playing tag is a fun way to burn off energy:

Well that just brought back some recent memories, and it sounded awfully similar! I'm sure we'll talk about the fun we had in a couple years!
We went camping this year also with our little guy. I had forgotten different it is to camp when they are that little.
And we DID get caught in "that weather". What a muddy, wet, memory filled experience!
Looks like you created some wonderful experiences!
What a great trip! yoU guys are great parents and have beautiful children! That camp site was BEAUTIFUL!
First of all, I just have to say that I think you guys are so wise. Seriously. Why stress out over plans just because you'd already made them? It's a vacation for goodness sake - it should be relaxing and fun and enjoyable. I like that you guys made the right changes to make that happen. Smart.
Second, my cousin's wife Wendy is from Prineville.
Third, I LOVE seeing all these pictures. Mostly because I just love seeing what fun times you're having together as a family. Love you guys. I wish, wish, wish we lived closer and could spend more time together.
We'll see you soon though! Can't wait for the Fair!
Oh that looks fun! I'm dying to take our girl (we used to camp a LOT before she was born) but now I worry so much about her getting cold at night. Plus we have to figure out how to pack it all - looks like you have the perfect set-up for that. I could use a night or two hanging out with the husband by the campfire!
Can I come on vacation next time?
You inspire me! I always focus on how much work it takes to do anything outside the home, but you make it look fun!
Just this week we decided we need to buy a trailer to pull behind the van so we can have enough room for all the crap.
Seriously, the way to make it work with littles is just what you did: stop lots, bring the pac-n-play & the potty.
Ohhhhh, Tahoe is my all-time favorite place in the world. Ryan came with us on a trip there many moons ago.
Your road trip is what you make it, and it looks like yours was a BLAST! Did you go through Susanville?
That 'open road' picture looks like our new neighborhood. :)
Can't wait for Part 2!
I'm so impressed with your willingness to CAMP with all your littles!
We love to camp and have camped with our small people buuuuuut we're going to wait a while before we do it again, I think.
Fun pics and good job keeping it relaxed and flexible. That's a challenge for me, even when we're not camping!
No matter what your family encounters weather-wise or otherwise, your kiddos will have super memories of the fun times they've had with their laid back mommy and daddy.
I LOVED looking at these! Keep 'em coming?
Hey I posted a request on my blog and ask for your participation if you get the chance! :)
